China's Wang Xinyu makes US Open second round for third straight year

China’s Wang Xinyu shrugged off a slow start to grind past home favorite Caroline Dolehide in three sets 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 on Tuesday, reaching the second round at the US Open women’s singles for a third consecutive year.

Wang dropped the first set 6-2 after being broken in the fourth and sixth games to fall behind 5-1.

She then found her rhythm in the second set, surviving an early break point. Both players went on to held serve until Wang converted a decisive break in the ninth game to move in front 5-4, before serving it out 6-4.

World No. 34 Wang struck first in the decider, breaking in the third game and rattling off a run of five in a row to build a 5-1 lead. Dolehide rallied to hold off match point in the seventh game, but Wang followed up by holding serve to close out the contest 6-2.

Earlier in the day, Buyunchaokete’s bid for a breakthrough Grand Slam win stalled against French wildcard Valentin Royer in the men’s singles, who swept to a 6-1, 6-4, 7-6 victory. China’s World No. 74 twice had his serve broken early in the first set, and again in the second.

Buyunchaokete responded by battling into a tiebreaker in the deciding set. But after taking the first point of the extra session, he promptly proceeded to drop the next seven, with the loss leaving him still seeking a first win after five main‑draw appearances at Grand Slams.

Meanwhile, World No. 1 Jannik Sinner began his men’s singles title defense in authoritative fashion, dismissing the Czech Republic’s Vit Kopriva 6-1, 6-1, 6-2 in just 1 hour and 38 minutes. The 24‑year‑old Italian set up a second‑round meeting with Australia’s Alexei Popyrin.

Iga Swiątek continued her imperious run with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Colombia’s Emiliana Arango, a victory that made her the first woman to win 65 consecutive WTA‑level first‑round matches, eclipsing the long-standing mark of 64 set by Monica Seles. Poland’s World No. 2 will face Suzan Lamens of the Netherlands next.

Other results included the USA’s eighth-seeded Amanda Anisimova beating Australia’s Kimberly Birrell 6-3, 6-2, and Brazil’s 18th-seeded Beatriz Haddad Maia seeing off Britain’s Sonay Kartal 6-3, 1-6, 6-1.
