How Tajikistan stunned the world to reach Asian Cup quarters

When Tajikistan, the lone debutants in this year’s Asian Cup, held China to a goalless draw in their opener, skeptics were quick to attribute it to China’s well-documented struggles on the international stage. As Tajikistan triumphed over Lebanon and secured a spot in the knockout round as Group A runners-up, skeptics dismissed it as Lebanon’s inability to convert their dominance into goals.  

However, on Sunday night, Tajikistan astounded the football world once again by reaching the quarterfinals with a dramatic 5-3 penalty shootout win over the United Arab Emirates, a team that had reached the semifinals in the previous two Asian Cups. At this point, skeptics are left speechless. Petar Segrt’s side has unequivocally proven that the Central Asian underdogs, ranked 106th in the world, are truly formidable forces to be reckoned with.

“Tonight, nobody in Tajikistan will be able to sleep,” Segrt exclaimed with a wide grin, addressing reporters after the incredible victory. “When the score line was 1-1 in the 94th minute … everyone felt disheartened, but I quickly urged the players to rise. In times of adversity, we must gather ourselves. I shouted, ‘Come on, anything is possible. Never give up.’ It reflects the character of our players, coaches and the fighting spirit of our country. In the end, luck was also on our side.”

As Tajikistan have consistently shown throughout the tournament, they possess an extraordinary ability to remain unfazed by the occasion and undeterred by any opponent. Their impressive performances in the group stage had already dispelled any assumptions that their match against the UAE would be an easy affair.  

Following a cautious start, Tajikistan took the lead in the 30th minute when Hanonov leapt over the defense to nod in a cross from Zoir Dzhuraboev. Although UAE keeper Khalid Eisa made an attempt to save, the ball managed to cross the line. Tajikistan had opportunities to extend their lead in the second half, but Alisher Dzhalilov squandered a golden chance, firing wide despite an impressive run into the box.  

It seemed like the moment of reckoning had arrived, and Tajikistan’s missed chances would come back to haunt them. With just five minutes left in stoppage time, Al Hammadi delivered a stunning equalizer, rising to head home Ali Saleh’s expertly taken free kick, thereby forcing the game into extra time.

During this additional period, the UAE gained momentum and appeared to be in control. However, the resilient Tajikistanis held their ground and managed to take the match to the nerve-wracking penalty shootout. It was in this high-pressure moment that goalkeeper Rustam Yatimov emerged as the hero, making a crucial save to deny Caio Canedo’s second penalty attempt for the opposition. In contrast, Tajikistan displayed nerves of steel and converted all their spot kicks, sparking exuberant celebrations from the dugout.

Their next hurdle will be determined by the outcome of Monday’s last-16 clash between Iraq and Jordan. There is no denying that the challenges ahead will only become tougher. Yet, Segrt remains resolute and unruffled by the daunting prospects. “I have boundless faith in my players because they continue to astonish me with their performances,” said the Croatian coach. “My next aspiration is to progress to the next round, once again.”
