Chinese speed skaters add 1 silver, 1 bronze at World Cup in Poland

Han Mei of China secured the women’s 1,000-meter silver medal at the International Skating Union (ISU) Speed Skating World Cup in Tomaszow Mazowiecki, Poland on Saturday.

Han finished the race in 1:16.31, behind 1:14.80 by the champion Miho Takagi of Japan. Another Japanese, Rio Yamada had the bronze in 1:16.33.

In the women’s 3,000-meter event, Ragne Wiklund of Norway topped the podium in 4:03.70. Merel Conijn of the Netherlands came in second and Francesca Lollobrigida of Italy was in third. China’s Yang Binyu finished in sixth in 4:08.37.

On the men’s side, Chinese skater Ning Zhongyan clinched the 1,000-meter bronze medal after finishing the final in 1:08.84. Jordan Stolz of the U.S. won the gold while breaking the track record in 1:08.42. Dutchman Kjeld Nuis had the silver in 1:08.78.

The men’s 5,000-meter title went to Sander Eitrem of Norway as he clocked 6:16.62 in the final. The silver medalist Davide Ghiotto of Italy was 1.67 seconds behind. Metodej Jilek of the Czech Republic got the bronze in 6:18.87.

The next stop of the World Cup will take place in Heerenveen, Netherlands from February 28 to March 2.
