CMG’s top 10 Chinese sports news stories of the year

China Media Group (CMG) on Thursday released its 10 most significant pieces of Chinese sports news.

1. The 31st International University Sports Federation (FISU) World University Games was hosted in Chengdu, southwest China’s Sichuan Province, between July 28 and August 8; the 19th Asian Games was hosted in Hangzhou, east China’s Zhejiang Province between September 23 and October 28.

2. China beat Japan to win the FIBA Women’s Asian Cup title in Sydney, Australia, on July 2.

3. China swept South Korea to clinch their 13th Sudirman Cup championship in Suzhou, east China’s Jiangsu Province, on May 21.

4. China won 20 gold medals at the World Aquatics Championships in Fukuoka, Japan, between July 14 and 30.

5. Ding Liren became the first male Chinese to win the title at the World Chess Championship at the St Regis Astana Hotel in Astana, Kazakhstan, on April 30.

6. Qin Haiyang of China was named the Best Male Swimmer of the Year at the premises of the future headquarters of World Aquatics in Budapest, Hungary, on October 22.

7. Zhang Zhilei of China beat Joe Joyce of Britain to win the WBO heavyweight interim title in London on April 15.

8. Chinese athletes won four gold and one bronze medals in esports, which made its debut as a medal event at the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, east China’s Zhejiang Province.

9. Chinese tennis players, including Zhang Zhizhen and Zheng Qinwen, have achieved remarkable breakthroughs in 2023.

10. CMG President Shen Haixiong and International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach signed a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at the IOC headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland, on October 27; CMG and the Paris 2024 Olympic Organizing Committee signed a strategic cooperation agreement in Paris, France, on October 23.
